Sexual Violence Prevention in University Settings | FORTHEM Volunteering Package

This programme consists of an immersion week for six students focused on preventing sexual violence at university. Based on the Red Flags campaign, it aims to provide a transformative educational experience on consent, communication, and shared responsibility in prevention. The innovative Red Flags approach reverses the traditional narrative: instead of placing responsibility on potential victims, it directly addresses those who may commit aggression and the surrounding community that can intervene. Results at the University of Agder (Norway) showed that 48% of students reported changing their behavior after the campaign.

FORTHEM students will actively participate in reflective workshops, specialised lectures, and will co-create materials that can be adapted to their own university contexts.

General Objectives:

• Raise awareness of primary prevention of sexual violence focused on perpetrator and bystander responsibility
• Learn innovative evidence-based prevention strategies and European good practices
• Encourage critical thinking about sexual myths and risky behaviors
• Promote intercultural learning on equality and prevention policies in European universities
• Develop non-violent communication skills and respect for consent

Specific Objectives:

• Understand the Red Flags approach and its impact on behaviour change.
• Identify behaviours that constitute red flags in sexual contexts.
• Reflect on the role of peers and bystander intervention.

  16.00-19.00: Welcome session and programme overview; group introduction; Blasco Ibáñez Campus tour; equality committees welcome activities
• Tuesday, 15th September
  9.00 - 13.00: Lecture/debate about different perspectives on sexual violence at university. Q&A session at the end
  16.00-19.00: Red Flags workshop: “Identifying Red Flags in Our Behaviour” (focusing on the aggressor’s responsibility)
• Wednesday, 16th September
  9.00 - 13.00: Small-group workshops on consent and communication, bystander role, and sexual myths vs reality
  16.00-19.00: Visit to Espai Violeta (a UV service that provides information and support to university members affected by sexist violence); collective reflection
• Thursday, 17th September
  9.00 - 13.00: Co-creation of social media materials - Students design their own “red flags” in English and Spanish
  16.00-19.00: Debate on change strategies in our universities; FORTHEM experience exchange
• Friday, 18th September
  9.00 - 13.00: Final evaluation and reflection on the programme; wrap-up and goodbye
  Afternoon (from 13.00 on): Departure

Funding:

• There are FORTHEM scholarships available for students from each FORTHEM Partner University. For more information, please contact your local FORTHEM Office. These scholarships will partially cover your travel, accommodation and living costs.
  
  
• FORTHEM funding is available for up to six students of the FORTHEM Alliance (excluding UV students). Once the host university has selected a number of candidates, the local FORTHEM Offices will verify whether they are eligible to receive the FORTHEM funding for the given event, in particular, verify whether they will not be double-funded during the mobility period. E.g. if any students are on a long-term mobility funded with an Erasmus+ grant, they cannot receive the FORTHEM funding for participating in this summer school; nevertheless, these students can contact their local FORTHEM Office to ask if it is possible to apply a special procedure and take a break in the long-term mobility for the whole duration of the summer school.
